EUROPE

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

One of the seven continents, Europe can geographically be marked only as a peninsula of the much bigger Eurasia. It is bound by the Ural Mountains in the east that separate it from Asia, the Mediterranean Sea in the south separating it from Africa and ending in the Atlantic Ocean in the west. Europe blessed with pleasant summer temperatures, mild rain, sunny Mediterranean coastline, mid-night sun in northern Scandinavia and chilly, snow-covered winters. With its rich historic, social and cultural history, Europe is a equally rich in natural beauty. While on holiday here, you will have plenty of time to admire the mighty snow-capped speaks of the Alps in Switzerland, Italy and Austria, the many Mediterranean resorts that dot the coastline such as Nice and Cannes, the rich green farmlands of Germany, vineyards of France, fjords of Norway, and the lowlands of Netherlands and Belgium. Of course, Europe is notorious for the frequent change in scenery and geographic features that greet travelers even at every hundred kilometers or so

ABOUT EUROPE

ABOUT EUROPE

Europe is the world’s second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth’s surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe’s approximately 50 states, Russia is by far the largest by both area and population, taking up 40% of the continent (although the country has territory in both Europe and Asia), while Vatican City is the smallest.

Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 733 million or about 11% of the world’s population.Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 15th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. In 1900, Europe’s share of the world’s population was 25%.

EDUCATION SYSTEM IN EUROPE

EDUCATION SYSTEM IN EUROPE

European higher education used to be known for its very diverse national systems. Now, it is characterized by the Bologna Process, the process that established the European Higher Education Area.

This has lead to an increase in programmes taught in English, to internationally recognizable higher education structures and to transparent quality assurance measures.

The European Higher Education Area should in fact be identifiable by its transparency, by its comparable degrees organized in a three-cycle structure, by its cooperation in quality assurance and by its mutual recognition of degrees. This in order to allow unhampered mobility to students, graduates and higher education staff.
